India Must Demand Respect: No More Humiliation for Deportees

The recent deportation of 104 Indian immigrants from the United States was nothing short of a national disgrace. Arriving in Amritsar, Punjab, these individuals were handcuffed and chained like criminals, forced to endure a 40-hour ordeal without proper food or facilities. A single toilet for over a hundred people added to their misery. Their only “crime” was seeking a better future, a pursuit that once drove Europeans to the New World centuries ago.

Why Did India Allow This Disrespect?

This appalling treatment followed an executive order by Donald Trump to expel illegal immigrants. However, India’s response was shockingly submissive. When the US tried deporting Mexicans and Colombians the same way, their governments stood firm, refusing military aircraft for their citizens. They insisted on commercial flights. Why did India not do the same?

A strong government would have demanded dignity for its people. If needed, India could have sent its own aircraft to bring them back with respect, just as it did in:

  • The Gulf War (1990-91) – Over 170,000 Indians were safely evacuated.
  • The Russia-Ukraine War (2022) – Thousands of stranded students were brought home.

If such large-scale operations were possible, why was this deportation mishandled?

Violation of Human Rights – Where Is India’s Voice?

This mass deportation likely violated international human rights protocols, including those outlined in the Geneva Conventions. Would the United States dare treat European deportees this way? A strong protest from India could have forced a change in approach. Instead, silence prevailed.

India’s Weak Stance Hurts Its Global Reputation

The Indian government’s passivity is a stark contrast to leaders like Indira Gandhi, who, in 1971, fearlessly opposed the US Navy’s Seventh Fleet near Indian waters. If India stood up to global superpowers then, why is it so timid now?

This must not happen again. The government must demand accountability and insist that all future deportations uphold human dignity. A nation that allows its citizens to be treated like second-class humans abroad will lose global respect.

India must make one thing clear—its people deserve dignity, no matter where they are.
