The administration’s push for stricter immigration policies raises concerns over fairness and impact.
The Green Card Dilemma: Families Caught in the Crossfire
For decades, Green Card holders of Indian origin, particularly elderly parents of U.S. citizens, have followed a familiar seasonal migration pattern—spending half the year in India during its festive months and escaping harsh American winters. However, recent policy changes under the Trump administration have turned their return journeys into ordeals.

Senior citizens, once welcomed as passive yet stabilizing figures in family life, are now facing unexpected scrutiny at U.S. borders. Many are being forced to surrender their Green Cards, with officials citing tightened immigration policies. While these individuals may not contribute to the U.S. economy through employment, their presence fosters household stability, indirectly benefiting the American economy.
A Push Toward Citizenship: Practical or Problematic?
Instead of penalizing legal immigrants, critics argue that the administration should encourage them to seek full citizenship. India’s Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) program already allows for dual privileges, granting former citizens a way to maintain strong ties to their homeland while embracing American life.
Simultaneously, Trump is set to introduce the Trump Gold Card—a fast-track residency program with a staggering $5 million price tag. This initiative, designed to attract high-net-worth individuals, could redefine U.S. immigration policies by prioritizing wealth over traditional merit-based pathways.
Rewriting H-1B: A Fairer Lottery or Restrictive Policy?
The administration has also revamped the H-1B visa process, replacing the once-randomized selection with a more structured employer-driven model. While this aims to curb fraudulent applications, it has sparked concerns among international workers, particularly those from India, who make up a significant portion of H-1B recipients.
Crackdown on Illegal Immigration: Necessary or Excessive?
Trump’s firm stance on deporting undocumented immigrants has resulted in planeloads of individuals, including many Indians, being sent back home. While India has its own immigration challenges with influxes from Myanmar and Bangladesh, the perceived heavy-handedness of the U.S. government—especially toward legal residents—is drawing criticism.
Further fueling controversy is Trump’s executive order restricting birthright citizenship—a significant departure from the 14th Amendment, which has upheld the principle of jus soli (citizenship by birth) for over 160 years. The move has triggered legal battles and uncertainty among immigrant families, highlighting growing global shifts in citizenship policies.
Balancing National Interests with Human Dignity
While safeguarding national interests is a priority for any government, the concern remains: is Trump’s citizenship overhaul a necessary measure or a misdirected missile? His drive to put “America First” must be carefully executed to avoid alienating legal immigrants who have long contributed to the nation’s success.
