Raipur, November , 2024In a proud moment for Chhattisgarh, Kanker district has been awarded the Best Inland District Award for its outstanding achievements in fisheries. The award was presented on the occasion of World Fisheries Day at an event held at the Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.

Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), along with Ministers of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel and Shri George Kurian, presented the trophy and certificate to Director of Fisheries Shri Narayan Singh Nag and Assistant Director (Kanker) Shri S.S. This is another feather in the cap for Chhattisgarh, which has previously received the Best Inland State Award in the fisheries sector.


CM Vishnudev Sai’s Felicitations

Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai expressed his delight at Kanker receiving this prestigious award. He congratulated the fisheries farmers of Kanker and the officials of the Fisheries Department, stating, “Despite being a landlocked state, Chhattisgarh has achieved remarkable success in fisheries and holds a leading position in the country. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our fisheries farmers.”

He also highlighted the state’s self-reliance in fish seed production, calling it a significant milestone that strengthens the state’s economy and fisheries ecosystem.


Chhattisgarh’s Growth in Fisheries

Chhattisgarh boasts a water area of 2.032 lakh hectares, with 96% of it actively utilized for fisheries. The state produces approximately 546 crore fish seeds and 7.30 lakh tonnes of fish annually, meeting its domestic needs and exporting fish seeds to neighboring states.

Chhattisgarh ranks 6th in the country in fish seed production and 8th in fish production, reflecting its significant contribution to India’s inland fisheries sector.

The state government has extended financial assistance to fisheries farmers through Kisan Credit Cards, providing loans with interest rates as low as 1% to 3%. These initiatives have played a crucial role in empowering fisheries farmers and boosting the sector’s growth.


A Model for Success

Kanker’s recognition at the national level highlights the potential of inland fisheries in transforming rural livelihoods. The award underscores Chhattisgarh’s commitment to sustainable fisheries development and its dedication to fostering innovation in agriculture and aquaculture.

This accomplishment not only brings honor to Kanker but also positions Chhattisgarh as a leader in fisheries, offering a model of growth for other landlocked states in India.
