Kedarnath, June 3, 2026: A joint rescue operation by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) successfully transported an ailing pilgrim from Kedarnath to a helipad today, after the individual’s condition worsened while on the pilgrimage route.
The district administration then airlifted the patient to a higher medical facility for advanced treatment.
According to officials, the pilgrim developed acute medical symptoms near the main shrine. SDRF and NDRF teams on site responded immediately, stabilised the patient, and carried out a coordinated transfer to the nearby helipad. A district administration spokesperson confirmed that a helicopter was arranged promptly to move the patient to a tertiary care centre for specialised care.

Officials’ statements
A senior SDRF officer said the teams are trained to manage medical emergencies in high-altitude pilgrimage zones and to coordinate rapid evacuations under difficult terrain and weather conditions. “We prioritise quick stabilisation and safe transfer to ensure the best possible outcome,” the officer said.
A district administration official added that heliborne evacuation protocols have been strengthened this season to reduce delays during medical emergencies. “We have kept helicopters and medical coordination teams on standby at strategic points, especially at sensitive locations such as Kedarnath,” the official said.
Context and safety measures
Kedarnath’s high altitude and challenging terrain make timely medical response critical. Authorities have been bolstering on-ground first aid, rescue equipment and heliborne evacuation readiness across pilgrimage routes to handle medical crises, landslides or weather-related incidents during the yatra.
