Construction workers often face uncertain income, unsafe working conditions and limited social protection. Direct financial assistance for education, housing, safety equipment, skill development and family support can therefore make a real difference to their lives. Chhattisgarh’s transfer of 16.94 crore Rupees to 54,084 beneficiaries through 14 welfare schemes is a meaningful step in this direction.
The largest share of this support went to children’s education. Under the Chief Minister Nau-nihal Scholarship scheme, 41,899 beneficiaries received 7.82 crore Rupees, while 8,089 children received assistance for uniforms and books. Education support can reduce the financial burden on worker families and help children continue their studies.
Assistance was also provided for housing, tools, safety equipment, skill development, e-rickshaws and support in cases of death or disability. These are practical forms of welfare because they respond to the everyday needs of workers and their families. Safety equipment and skill training, in particular, can improve both protection and earning capacity.
Direct benefit transfer to bank accounts is a positive method of delivery. It reduces dependence on middlemen and makes the process more transparent. However, the effectiveness of such support depends on easy registration, timely renewal of worker cards and quick processing of applications. Workers should not have to struggle with paperwork to access benefits meant for them.
The broader goal should be to ensure that every eligible construction worker is registered and aware of available schemes. Many workers in the informal sector remain outside welfare systems because of lack of documents or awareness. Outreach camps, simple digital processes and assistance at worksites can help close this gap.
Financial aid provides immediate relief, but durable worker welfare also requires safe workplaces, fair wages and social security. If Chhattisgarh combines these transfers with stronger enforcement of labour protections, it can offer construction workers and their families more secure and dignified lives.
