Free registration can turn land into real security

Free registration can turn land into real security

For many rural families, a plot or house is their most valuable asset. But ownership becomes fully secure only when it is supported by proper revenue documents. Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Minister Registration Scheme, under which eligible landholders receive free registration of their plots, addresses this important gap.

The scheme covers people who already have a lease or allotment for their plot or house but do not have permanent registration. The state government will bear the stamp duty cost, so the property remains with the landholder while the government pays the registration charge. This can remove a financial barrier that often prevents poorer families from completing formal documentation.

Proper registration has practical value. It establishes ownership, enables buying and selling of property and can make the landholder eligible for loans. For families that depend on small plots or homes, this can improve access to credit and provide greater protection against disputes.

So far, more than 12.87 lakh registrations have been completed in the state as of 1 November. The administration aims to complete 20 lakh registrations by 15 November. Reaching this target will require efficient verification, clear communication and support for people who may find documentation processes difficult.

The plan to involve ministers, MPs and MLAs in completing registrations in villages on Dhanteras can help speed up the campaign. However, the focus should remain on quality and fairness. Every eligible beneficiary should receive registration without harassment, incorrect records or pressure to meet targets.

Free registration is a meaningful step towards economic security for rural households. If implemented transparently and completed on time, it can give families stronger legal rights over their property and open new opportunities for financial stability.
