Dhamtari, December 9, 2024 In the face of evolving times, farming—a profession often perceived as fading—has found renewed life and purpose under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. By introducing innovative schemes like the Mukhyamantri Krishak Unnati Yojana, the state government is empowering farmers, doubling their income, and ensuring farming remains a viable and profitable occupation.

One of the beneficiaries of this initiative is Premchand Sahu, a resident of Bhathgaon village in Dhamtari district. With 7.5 acres of agricultural land, Premchand supports his family through farming, growing paddy during the kharif season and chickpeas in rabi. Thanks to the Mukhyamantri Krishak Unnati Yojana, he has been able to provide for his family and invest in his children’s education.

Farming Becomes a Gateway to Modern Education

Premchand’s elder son, Yashraj, is pursuing a B.Sc. in Agriculture at a prestigious institute in Raipur, while his younger son studies in the 10th grade at a local private school. Premchand credits the ₹32,000 bonus he received last year from selling paddy under the scheme for funding Yashraj’s education.

“Farming has been our family’s traditional livelihood for generations. With modern methods and government support, agriculture can become a lucrative profession. That’s why I’m educating my son in agriculture,” Premchand says.

Interestingly, Premchand’s family was the first in the village to own a tractor, reflecting their commitment to adopting modern farming techniques. Grateful for the government’s initiatives, Premchand adds, “Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai’s schemes have eased our worries and brought smiles to our faces. I thank him wholeheartedly.”

Mukhyamantri Krishak Unnati Yojana: A Boon for Farmers

The Mukhyamantri Krishak Unnati Yojana is a flagship welfare program aimed at improving the income and living standards of farmers in Chhattisgarh. Under this scheme:

  • Farmers receive ₹3,100 per quintal for their paddy, significantly higher than the support price.
  • The differential amount above the support price is credited directly to farmers’ accounts.
  • Farmers use these funds for essential needs like children’s education, healthcare, and family welfare.

The initiative has instilled confidence among farmers and rekindled their interest in agriculture. The financial stability it offers enables farmers to invest in modern practices like borewell installation, resulting in higher yields and increased income.

Transforming Challenges into Opportunities

Farming is fraught with challenges, from unpredictable weather to pest infestations. Premchand explains, “Good rainfall is essential, but even with favorable weather, pests and diseases can ruin crops. However, with the right support and modern techniques, farming can be a reliable source of income.”

The scheme’s benefits are not limited to financial aid. It also fosters a sense of security among farmers, encouraging them to pursue agriculture as a sustainable profession.

A Future Rooted in Agriculture

Premchand envisions a brighter future where farming is no longer seen as a declining profession but as a path to progress. By educating his son in agricultural sciences, he hopes to integrate modern knowledge with traditional practices, ensuring his family continues to thrive in farming.

Conclusion

The Mukhyamantri Krishak Unnati Yojana is more than just a welfare scheme—it’s a lifeline for farmers like Premchand Sahu, transforming agriculture into a profitable and sustainable livelihood. By addressing the challenges faced by farmers and providing them with financial and technical support, the Chhattisgarh government is paving the way for an agricultural renaissance in the state.

This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to empowering its farmers, ensuring that agriculture remains the backbone of Chhattisgarh’s economy while fostering the dreams and aspirations of farming families.
