Plastic waste, once a scourge on cities and ecosystems, now fuels income and resilient infrastructure in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district. Under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, blending it with bitumen crafts durable rural roads while cleansing the environment.

Innovative Road Construction

In Mainpat, an experimental road mixes 8 percent plastic waste with bitumen at Suvarpara plant in Bhatouli block, sourced from Swachh Bharat Mission collections via Darimas SRF center. This boosts road strength, service life, and impermeability to water. Official’s confirm enhanced durability in the bituminous OGPC layer.

Empowering Women, Boosting Economy

Swachh Bharat Mission women’s groups earn from collected plastic, sold at Rupees 25 per kg for road use, up from Rupees 15 to 20. Surguja Collector Ajit Vasant notes 500 kg used in a 1 km Mainpat road, with plans for expansion. This turns nuisance into revenue, fostering self reliance.

Broader Environmental Gains

Such initiatives align national plastic waste management drives, reducing landfill burdens and promoting circular economy. Surgujas model exemplifies how local innovation integrates cleanliness with development, setting a replicable precedent for rural India.
