Over 75,000 Celebratory Meals Organized in Schools Across the State
Raipur, November 27, 2024 In a heartwarming initiative, schools in Chhattisgarh have embraced community participation to organize celebratory meals called “Nyota Bhoj”. This unique approach, introduced under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Yojana, has seen over 75,000 meals organized in 30,000 schools statewide, with generous contributions from individuals, organizations, and communities.
An Emotional Connection with Students
A touching example of this initiative occurred recently in Bilaspur’s Pt. Ramdulare Dubey Swami Atmanand Government Higher Secondary Boys School, where retired teacher Shri Pratap Patanwar celebrated his birthday by organizing a Nyota Bhoj for 700 students. Overcome with emotion, he said, “I owe my 42 years of service and my livelihood to these children. Being able to give back to them in this special way fills my heart with immense joy.”
He praised the initiative for fostering a deep sense of community and emotional connection. By sharing meals with students, many of whom come from economically weaker sections, contributors experience the joy of giving firsthand. It also helps build a stronger bond between schools and the community while ensuring that schools remain well-monitored.
Chief Minister’s Vision Behind Nyota Bhoj
Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai initiated the concept of Nyota Bhoj, rooted in Chhattisgarh’s rich tradition of charity and communal harmony. Highlighting the importance of food donation, he remarked, “Our society has always embraced giving, as seen during festivals like Cherchera. Through this program, we are addressing childhood malnutrition by tapping into this age-old tradition of generosity.”
The Chief Minister himself began this initiative by organizing a celebratory meal for children at an Ashram Shala in his native village, Bagiya, on his birthday.
What is Nyota Bhoj?
Nyota Bhoj is a community-driven concept designed to enhance the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Yojana. Individuals, families, or organizations are encouraged to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or festivals by hosting meals at nearby schools, hostels, or ashrams. Contributions can include:
- Full meals for children
- Additional supplements such as sweets, fruits, or sprouted grains
- Nutritious snacks like namkeen or traditional dishes
Community Participation Across Districts
The initiative has seen overwhelming participation across Chhattisgarh, with several districts achieving remarkable success:
- 99% schools in Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai and Kondagaon districts have hosted Nyota Bhoj.
- 98% schools in Janjgir-Champa, 96% in Dhamtari, and 95% in Sukma and Rajnandgaon.
- Other districts like Balod (93%), Durg (90%), and Bemetara, Korea, and Kawardha (89%) also report significant involvement.
- Even remote districts like Dantewada (70%) and Raigarh (75%) are embracing the concept wholeheartedly.
Fostering Nutrition and Unity
The Nyota Bhoj initiative is not just about providing food but fostering a sense of belonging, compassion, and unity within the community. By engaging people from all walks of life, it ensures that children receive not just nourishment but also the warmth of shared celebration, making this program a true hallmark of Chhattisgarh’s community spirit.
This simple yet impactful innovation continues to garner widespread appreciation, setting an inspiring example for other states to follow.
