Bhopal’s “Sudden Turn Bridge”: Engineering Blunder or Sheer Negligence?

In Bhopal’s Aishbagh area, an overbridge has become the talk of the town — not for its engineering marvel, but for a shockingly odd design flaw. Built over a railway track, what makes this bridge stand out — and not in a good way — is a sudden, almost 90-degree turn mid-way. The curve is so sharp that anyone driving over it for the first time is likely to be taken by surprise. It’s a potential accident zone!

Typically, bridges and roads are constructed with gentle curves to ensure a smooth and safe driving experience. But this particular design has raised eyebrows — and alarm bells. Not only is the layout baffling, but it’s also being termed outright dangerous by locals and experts alike.

This isn’t an isolated incident either. While Bawadia Bridge has been cited as an example of advanced engineering, many recently constructed overbridges across Bhopal have drawn criticism. From severe waterlogging to incomplete or weak construction — the list of technical flaws is growing. The question arises: how are such massive lapses in engineering and planning going unnoticed? Who is accountable, and why is there no action from the authorities?

Is this the result of careless planning? Or is it a clear case of negligence by contractors and the concerned departments? The design of this “sudden-turn bridge” doesn’t just raise technical concerns — it casts a serious shadow over public safety.

Infrastructure projects are vital for the city’s development. But has the commitment to quality and safety been reduced to mere paperwork?
