Successful Open Heart Surgery Performed on a 50-Year-Old Woman
Titanium Prosthetic Valve Implant Conducted Free of Cost Under the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Ayushman Scheme
Raipur, December 27, 2024
In a significant milestone for Chhattisgarh’s healthcare sector, the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital has commenced open-heart surgery services under the guidance of Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai. In its first successful procedure, a team of skilled doctors, led by Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, performed open-heart surgery on a 50-year-old woman, giving her a new lease on life.
Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal praised the hospital’s efforts, describing it as a significant achievement and a new year’s gift for the people of the state. He announced that bypass surgery services would also begin soon at the hospital.
Patient’s Journey and Treatment Details
The patient, a resident of Mahasamund, had been suffering from breathlessness and heart palpitations for the past three years. Her condition worsened due to a severe narrowing of the heart valve and leakage in another valve, as revealed in initial tests.
Though advised to undergo surgery three years ago, fear of the open-heart procedure led the patient and her family to delay treatment. However, with worsening symptoms, she sought help from Dr. Sahu, who provided detailed counseling about the procedure’s necessity and benefits.
On December 26, the hospital’s expert team successfully performed the surgery. They replaced the defective valve with a Titanium Prosthetic Valve and repaired the leaking tricuspid valve. The procedure, known as Mitral Valve Replacement plus Tricuspid Valve Repair, was conducted using a heart-lung machine.
Post-Surgery Recovery
Dr. Sahu reported that the patient is recovering well. She resumed eating meals on her own the day after the surgery, and her condition continues to improve steadily under medical supervision.
The Surgical Team
The successful procedure was carried out by a dedicated team, including:
- Dr. Krishnakant Sahu (Head of Cardiac Surgery)
- Dr. Varun (Cardiac Anesthetist)
- Rahul and Digeshwar (Perfusionists)
- Nursing staff: Rajendra, Narendra, and Chowa Ram
A Milestone in Public Healthcare
The launch of advanced open-heart surgery services at Ambedkar Hospital marks a significant leap forward in Chhattisgarh’s public healthcare system. It offers hope, particularly to economically disadvantaged patients who previously could not afford such surgeries. With the support of the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Ayushman Scheme, these procedures are provided free of cost.
This initiative will reduce the need for patients to travel to metropolitan cities for advanced cardiac care, bringing state-of-the-art medical services closer to home. It is a step toward realizing the government’s vision of accessible, affordable, and world-class healthcare for all.
