Mahasamund: A Success Story of Healthcare for the Poor

November 29, 2024 | Mahasamund

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) continues to be a lifeline for poor and economically weaker families across India, offering access to essential healthcare services. Under this flagship scheme by the Government of India, eligible families receive an annual health insurance cover of up to ₹5 lakh, enabling them to access free treatment in empaneled hospitals.

For Prakash Yadav, a farmer from Belsonda village in Mahasamund Block, this scheme turned into a lifesaver for his premature newborn daughter, Palak.

A Fight for Survival

Palak was born prematurely on September 14, 2023, at the MEKA Hospital in Raipur. Due to her critical condition at birth, doctors advised intensive medical care. She was admitted to a private hospital in Raipur and placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Her treatment lasted a challenging 45 days, with the total cost escalating to ₹2.75 lakh—a staggering amount for her father, who relies on daily agricultural labor for livelihood.

Ayushman Bharat: A Lifesaver

With no means to arrange the necessary funds, Prakash turned to the Ayushman Bharat PMJAY card, under which his family was registered. The scheme covered the entire cost of Palak’s treatment, providing much-needed relief and saving her life.

Expressing his gratitude, Prakash shared, “Without the Ayushman Bharat scheme, saving my daughter’s life would not have been possible. This initiative has given us a new lease on life. I thank the Honorable Prime Minister and the Chhattisgarh Government for offering such a life-changing facility to poor families.”

Empowering Lives Through Health Initiatives

The Ayushman Bharat PMJAY scheme continues to touch millions of lives across the country, offering free treatment to families who cannot afford healthcare expenses. Stories like Palak’s underline its effectiveness and far-reaching impact.

Prakash Yadav’s family is now actively spreading awareness about the scheme in their community, encouraging other eligible individuals to avail of its benefits.

Key Features of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme

  • Eligibility: Provides financial support for healthcare services to economically weaker sections.
  • Coverage: Free treatment up to ₹5 lakh annually.
  • Empaneled Hospitals: Available at both public and private hospitals across India.

Palak’s story exemplifies how accessible healthcare can transform lives and bring hope to families in dire situations.
