When a rooftop brings clean power home

When a rooftop brings clean power home

In Chakrway village of Simga block, Mamta Bai Nishad’s home has taken a step towards clean energy. A 3 kilowatt solar panel system has been installed under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with support from solar didis associated with the Bihan rural livelihoods mission.

Their role goes beyond explaining the scheme. The women help villagers understand the process, register and arrange installation. In Chakrway, the Shubh Sankul organisation of Bansankara carried out the work through its Bihan solar didis. Rural women are thus not only adopting new technology; they are helping take it to other households, building technical skills and opening new livelihood opportunities for themselves.

This is the promise of a well designed clean energy programme: lower dependence on conventional electricity, greater household energy security and a practical role for local communities in the transition. A rooftop system can make a family more self reliant, while each installation adds to the use of renewable energy. But the scheme’s success should be judged not only by the number of panels installed. Households need clear information, reliable installation and dependable support if a system develops a fault. Any promised subsidy or billing benefit must also be transparent and timely.

The Bihan solar didis offer a particularly valuable model because they connect policy with local knowledge. They can help families navigate registration and installation while ensuring that women share in the economic opportunities created by the energy transition. With sustained training, fair compensation and after sales support, this work can grow from a village service into a durable rural enterprise.

Mamta Bai’s solar roof is a household benefit and a small example of community led change. The wider test is whether more families can access the same opportunity and keep their systems working over time. That is how a clean energy scheme can become a lasting source of confidence, savings and local livelihood.
