Raipur, December 9, 2024 For generations, the Birhor family in the Dumarkachar village of Korba district’s Pali block lived in a fragile mud house, enduring the challenges of poverty and harsh weather. However, a new chapter of hope and security has begun for Shyamlal Birhor and his family, thanks to the PM Awas Yojana.
Generations of Struggle in a Mud House
Shyamlal Birhor, a member of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), shared his family’s hardships. “For five generations, we lived in this mud house, unable to save enough money to build a permanent one. Rain was our greatest enemy, with water leaking through the roof and soaking our clothes and belongings. Collapsing walls during heavy downpours left us terrified,” Shyamlal said.

The lack of financial resources meant they could never dream of a proper home. Shyamlal works as a traditional bamboo artisan, crafting baskets and other items for sale. Alongside this, the family cultivates a small plot of land to grow paddy. Despite their hard work, their income was never sufficient to construct a solid house.
A Dream Fulfilled with PM Awas Yojana
With support from the PM Awas Yojana, Shyamlal’s family now has a permanent house. “For us, owning a pucca house was an impossible dream. But today, it has become a reality,” Shyamlal said with gratitude. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for prioritizing the welfare of vulnerable tribal communities.
Shyamlal emphasized that the permanent home represents more than just a structure—it is a shield of security and comfort for future generations. “While we endured the hardships of a mud house, our children and grandchildren will now live safely and comfortably in a solid home,” he added.
Government’s Vision for Empowering Vulnerable Communities
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the Chhattisgarh government approved the construction of 18 lakh houses under the PM Awas Yojana. Funds were directly credited to beneficiaries’ accounts, enabling them to begin construction promptly. The initiative specifically targeted PVTG families, connecting them to development through infrastructure, housing, and other welfare schemes.
Key Highlights of PM Awas Yojana in Chhattisgarh

A New Beginning for the Birhor Family
For Shyamlal Birhor, the new home is a symbol of dignity and stability. As they prepare to move into their newly constructed house, the family reflects on their journey from hardship to hope. The PM Awas Yojana has given them more than a roof over their heads—it has restored their confidence and brought them closer to a better future.

Families like the Birhors now have the security of a permanent home and the hope of a brighter tomorrow.
