Universities Must Prepare Youth to Meet Societal Needs, Says Governor Patel

6th Convocation Ceremony of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Social Science University, Mhow

Bhopal, December 20, 2024

Governor Mangubhai Patel, paying homage to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, emphasized the need for universities and teachers to prepare the younger generation to address the country’s and society’s evolving needs. Speaking at the 6th Convocation Ceremony of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Social Science University, Mhow, the Governor called for a commitment to inclusivity, social harmony, and the upholding of constitutional values.

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav graced the event as the chief guest, accompanied by Minister of Water Resources Tulsi Ram Silawat, former Vice-Chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, Dr. Prakash C. Bartunia, and MLA Usha Thakur.

Governor Patel’s Address

The Governor described the Constitution as a living document and the “modern scripture of independent India.” He urged students to embody its principles in their conduct and to take responsibility for the upliftment of underprivileged and marginalized communities. Governor Patel lauded Prime Minister Modi’s vision of nation-building aligned with Ambedkar’s ideals, as reflected in the National Education Policy (NEP).

“The NEP provides educational institutions with the opportunity to produce citizens committed to social prosperity and equality,” said Governor Patel. He called upon teachers to foster entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, and social engagement among students. He envisioned today’s youth as the leaders who would shape a developed India by the time the nation celebrates its centenary of independence.

Chief Minister Yadav’s Address

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s inspirational journey of overcoming adversity to achieve excellence in education. He described Ambedkar’s dedication to society as exemplary, emphasizing that the Constitution he drafted harmonized India’s diverse cultures and communities.

Dr. Yadav assured the audience of the government’s commitment to expanding academic faculties based on emerging societal needs. He announced plans for a January meeting of vice-chancellors, chaired by the Governor, to explore new initiatives in higher education. The Chief Minister also reiterated the importance of skill development and guidance for youth, alongside efforts to make universities self-reliant.

He commended the Governor’s initiative in facilitating degree conferrals and extended best wishes to the graduating students for a bright future.

Convocation Highlights

  • The ceremony conferred Ph.D. degrees on 16 research scholars.
  • Over the past five years, the university has awarded doctoral degrees to more than 100 scholars.
  • During the most recent academic session, 851 students earned degrees, with Ph.D. recipients receiving their honors on stage.

The event began with floral tributes and the lighting of a ceremonial lamp before statues of Goddess Saraswati, Buddha, and Dr. Ambedkar. Vice-Chancellor Shri Ramlal Atram delivered the welcome address, and the Registrar expressed gratitude in the concluding remarks.
