Turning opportunity into self-reliance

Turning opportunity into self-reliance

For a rural woman, starting a small business often requires more than hard work. It needs initial capital, guidance and the confidence that support will be available when needed. Savita Rajak of Chheddad village in Jashpur district shows how these elements can come together to create a steady livelihood. With assistance from the Bihan scheme and a loan under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, she began goat rearing and now earns about 10,000 Rupees a month.

Savita joined a women’s village organisation under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission. Through this organisation, she received 50,000 Rupees in financial assistance and a Mudra loan of one lakh Rupees. With this total support of 1.5 lakh Rupees, she started her goat-rearing enterprise. Her hard work and careful management turned it into a regular source of income.

The value of this income extends beyond the family budget. It helps Savita contribute to household expenses and her children’s education. It has also increased her confidence and encouraged her to expand the business in the future. For a family that once faced difficulty meeting daily needs, a dependable source of earnings brings both financial relief and greater dignity.

Savita’s family has also received support under other welfare schemes. A gas cylinder under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has made cooking easier, while a pucca house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has provided safer shelter. The Mahtari Vandan Yojana gives the family 1,000 Rupees every month. Together, these measures address both livelihood and basic needs.

Her experience also shows why self-help groups matter. They can connect women to savings, credit and collective support, making it easier to start an enterprise. But a loan alone is not enough. Women also need training, veterinary care, market linkages and guidance to manage livestock businesses successfully. If these services are available, more women can turn small beginnings into sustainable livelihoods.

Savita is now an inspiration for other women in her village. Her journey shows that self-reliance can begin with a small step, provided a woman has access to opportunity and the determination to use it. When rural women earn and manage enterprises, the benefits reach their families and strengthen the wider local economy.
