Sonakhan, Raipur | December 10, 2024 Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai paid tribute to Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, Chhattisgarh’s first freedom fighter, on his death anniversary. Speaking at the Shraddhanjali Program held in Sonakhan, the birthplace and workplace of the martyr, the Chief Minister hailed his sacrifice as a beacon of inspiration. “Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh stood for the dignity of the poor and laid down his life for their welfare,” he remarked.


Key Announcements for Sonakhan’s Development

New Infrastructure and Welfare Initiatives

During the event, the Chief Minister unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at honoring the martyr’s legacy and uplifting the region:

  • Post-Matric Hostel to be established in Sonakhan for better education opportunities.
  • Allocation of ₹15 lakh for organizing the Shaheed Madai Mela annually.
  • Installation of solar-powered high-mast lights at 23 historical and tourist sites in Sonakhan.
  • Upgrade of three local ponds under the Amrit Sarovar Project to enhance water conservation.

Remembering the Legacy of Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh

Chief Minister Sai recounted the pivotal contributions of Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh to India’s struggle for freedom. He described how, during a severe famine in Sonakhan, the martyr distributed grain to the starving poor by breaking into the granaries of British allies. This act of defiance against colonial oppression ultimately led to his capture and execution by hanging at Jaistambh Chowk, Raipur, on December 10, 1857.

The Chief Minister remarked, “This sacred land of Sonakhan symbolizes sacrifice for the poor. Veer Narayan Singh’s dedication to protecting the dignity of the underprivileged continues to inspire us today.”


Honoring Tribal Freedom Fighters

Chief Minister Sai acknowledged the significant contributions of tribal freedom fighters and emphasized the government’s efforts to preserve their legacy:

  • The construction of a Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Museum in Raipur at a cost of ₹9 crore.
  • Observing Tribal Pride Day (Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas) every year on November 15, as declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Expansion of basic facilities like roads, clean drinking water, education, and healthcare in tribal-dominated areas.
