Bhopal, November 25, 2024, Madhya Pradesh has cemented its position as one of India’s top states in milk production. Dairy farmers in the state are not only producing milk in significant quantities but are also earning substantial profits from the sale of milk and dairy products. Contributing 9% to India’s total milk production, the state is now aiming to increase this share to 20%, as per the vision of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav.
The Madhya Pradesh Dairy Federation’s Sanchi brand continues to offer high-quality dairy products at affordable prices, enhancing the income of member farmers. Dairy farming plays a pivotal role in making agriculture a profitable venture in the state.
Key Achievements in Milk Production
According to Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Mr. Lakhan Patel:
- Daily Milk Production: Madhya Pradesh produces 591 lakh kilograms of milk daily, ranking third in the country.
- Per Capita Milk Availability: The state offers 644 grams of milk per person per day, significantly higher than the national average of 459 grams.
- Livestock Statistics: With 7.5% of the national livestock, Madhya Pradesh surpasses the national average of 5.05%. It ranks third in cattle population (187.5 lakh) and fourth in buffalo population (103.5 lakh), as per the 2019 Livestock Census.
Innovations in Animal Husbandry
- Mobile Veterinary Clinics: The state operates 1,962 mobile veterinary units, providing doorstep treatment for animals.
- Disease Control: Madhya Pradesh leads the nation in the National Animal Disease Control Program, having vaccinated 240.47 lakh cattle and buffaloes.
- Breed Improvement: Advanced embryo transfer techniques are being used to improve cattle breeds, benefiting farmers with higher incomes.
Government Initiatives Boosting Dairy and Livestock Sector
The state government has introduced several programs to enhance dairy production and support farmers:
- Collaboration with NDDB: A partnership with the National Dairy Development Board aims to increase milk production.
- Bonuses and Incentives: Farmers receive bonuses for milk production and financial aid for rearing indigenous cattle under the Madhya Pradesh Natural Agriculture Development Scheme.
- Solar Energy Support: Farmers adopting solar energy for dairy farming are being incentivized.
- Budget Allocations: ₹590 crore has been allocated for cow conservation and promotion in 2024-25, including ₹150 crore for the Chief Minister’s Cooperative Dairy Producer Incentive Scheme.

- Hi-Tech Cowsheds: A 10,000-cattle-capacity hi-tech cowshed is being constructed in Barkhedi Dob, Bhopal, with foundation work inaugurated by CM Dr. Mohan Yadav.
- Increased Grazing Land: Encroachments on pasture lands are being removed, and 2,500 operational cowsheds are home to over 4 lakh cattle.
- Hydraulic Lifting Vehicles: Special vehicles for rescuing injured cattle in road accidents have been introduced.
- CNG Plant: The country’s first 100-tonne capacity CNG plant has been established at the model cowshed in Gwalior.
- Vrindavan Villages: Every block in the state is developing a “Vrindavan Village” to promote rural livelihoods and milk production.
