He had trouble answering questions coherently and frequently came out as unsure. It was also clear that she could make fun of his conceit.
It was evident from the ninety-minute debate on Wednesday that Kamala Harris, the vice president, was the clear winner over Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump. Throughout the evening, she skilfully used her acute prosecutorial abilities to put Trump on the defensive, forcing him to scramble to defend his prior administration. Harris repeatedly and deftly revealed Trump’s weaknesses, particularly when she questioned him on his contentious pact with the Taliban. He found it difficult to respond intelligibly, frequently coming across as unsure.
She was clearly able to undermine his ego, especially when she gently made fun of his public outbursts, which made him agitated and susceptible to her rhetorical manoeuvres.
Unknowingly playing into her strengths, it appeared like Trump was struggling to maintain composure in the face of her sharp questions.
During the discussion, Trump’s incapacity to maintain conciseness was one of his main faults. He kept falling for Harris’s bait, not realising when it would be best to remain silent. For example, Trump made the absurd and unfounded assertion that illegal aliens were “eating the pets of good people in Springfield, Ohio” when discussing immigration.
This not only undermined his argument but also demonstrated his propensity to distort important conversations by making absurd claims. Trump took the bait each time Harris tried to draw him in, seeming petty, insecure, and furious. Surprisingly, Trump had plenty of chance to turn attention away from Harris and towards her time serving as Joe Biden’s vice president. Harris had to keep reminding him that she was his opponent and not President Biden because he was fixated on the latter. She even avoided answering a pointed question about why the Biden administration put off dealing with illegal immigration for so long. Trump failed to take advantage of her avoidance because he was preoccupied with his pet-eating narrative.
In the end, the debate caused more harm than good to Trump’s campaign. Although Trump’s first battle with President Joe Biden in June brought attention to the President’s age-related challenges, the debate on Wednesday emphasised Trump’s lack of adaptability. Given his dismal performance, it’s doubtful that Trump will agree to debate Harris again. Naturally, other factors also have a role in determining the results of elections. Harris prevailed in this discussion, but Trump still has a sizable fan base, so it might not be enough to overcome him on its own.
However, the evening undoubtedly highlighted both her and his advantages.
