The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) issued a new evacuation order on the eve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington. The order asked Palestinians to leave several neighborhoods in Khan Younis, including areas previously designated as humanitarian zones. Over 39,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, had been slain in Gaza by the IDF in less than 10 months, according to Netanyahu’s address to the US Congress on Wednesday.

Over 90,000 Palestinians have been injured, and the majority of the enclave’s population has been relocated multiple times.

A large number of journalists have been killed. Bombings have targeted private organizations, UN humanitarian workers, hospitals, ambulances, and tent camps for displaced people. Gaza, under IDF siege, lacks basic necessities such as food, water, and medicine. The UN has already highlighted the suffering of Palestinians, but now warns of potential epidemics. Two UN Security Council resolutions advocated for a cease-fire in Gaza. The International Court of Justice has issued two decisions against Israel’s conduct during the conflict, alleging genocide. US politicians praised Netanyahu during his address, seemingly unconcerned with the situation.

Mr. Netanyahu’s government would not have been able to fight such a terrible war without the United States’ political and military support. The conflict was launched by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people. Israel’s decision to continue the war is based on the fact that over 100 persons are still being held captive by Hamas since October 7. In the pretext of combating Hamas, Israel has punished the whole Palestinian population in Gaza. Biden administration officials have expressed concern about civilian casualties. Despite vocal protests, Washington has done little to pressure Israel to act.

Furthermore, the US continues to send military aid to Israel. However, there are ongoing problems in the relationship. Protests in Washington during Netanyahu’s speech to Congress highlight growing public condemnation of his war and America’s support for it.

The reception Mr. Netanyahu received in Congress demonstrates that he has the support of the elites.

Protests and dissent among lawmakers indicate a deterioration of the national consensus on Israel in the United States.
