For a small farmer, even a modest amount received at the right time can make a difference. Seeds, fertiliser and crop protection inputs are needed before the season begins, but many small cultivators struggle to arrange money at that point. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi provides 6,000 Rupees a year in three instalments, sent directly to farmers’ bank accounts.
The experience of Narendra Kumar, a farmer from Dumartarai in Narayanpur, illustrates this. With only 0.368 hectares of agricultural land, he earlier faced difficulty arranging inputs on time. After registering for the scheme, he began receiving the annual support directly in his account, which helped him purchase seeds, fertiliser and other agricultural materials.
Such assistance can improve timely farming operations and reduce dependence on informal borrowing. When a farmer is able to complete sowing and field preparation on schedule, it can support better production and more stable household income. The scheme’s direct transfer method also reduces delays and makes benefit delivery more transparent.
However, 6,000 Rupees a year is supplementary support, not a complete solution to the challenges of farming. Small and marginal farmers still need dependable irrigation, fair prices, timely credit, quality inputs and protection from crop losses. Income support works best when it is combined with these essential services.
Narendra Kumar’s effort to inform other farmers about the scheme is valuable. Awareness remains a major barrier, especially in remote and tribal areas where eligible families may not know how to register or update their records. Local agriculture departments and village institutions can play an important role in spreading accurate information.
The larger goal should be to ensure that every eligible farmer receives the benefit without delay and that support reaches those with the greatest need. When financial assistance is timely and accessible, it can give small farmers greater confidence to invest in their land and improve their livelihoods.
