Digital services should make paperwork simpler

For most citizens, a driving licence or vehicle document is a routine requirement, not a matter that should require repeated visits to a government office. Chhattisgarh’s transport department has addressed this by linking several services to online auto-approval through an Aadhaar-based application system. The change allows applicants to complete many tasks from their mobile phones.

Services such as renewal of a driving licence, change of address and issue of a duplicate licence can now be applied for online. Vehicle-related services, including duplicate registration certificates, name transfer, address change and addition or removal of a financier’s name, have also been brought under the system. This reduces the need for applicants to visit transport offices for routine work.

The benefit is practical. Online applications save time, travel and effort, especially for people living far from district headquarters. Digital processing can also make services more transparent, as applicants can follow the status of their requests and officials can maintain clearer records.

Kabirdham district reported revenue receipts of more than 53.94 crore Rupees in 2025-26, while 16.53 crore Rupees were received between April and July 2026 in the current financial year. Revenue collection is important, but the primary measure of a citizen-facing service should be ease of access and timely delivery.

Digital systems must remain simple and reliable. Applicants need clear instructions, easy payment options and support if an application is rejected or delayed. Those who are not comfortable with online processes should be able to seek help at service centres without unnecessary difficulty. Data security and accurate verification are equally important.

The transport department’s move reflects a wider shift towards digital governance. Its success will be judged not by the number of services listed online, but by whether citizens receive their documents quickly and without hassle. If auto-approval works smoothly and support is available when needed, it can make routine government services genuinely citizen-friendly.
