Advanced diagnostics must reach every patient

Early and accurate diagnosis can make a decisive difference in the treatment of serious illnesses. The launch of a PET CT Scan Centre at MY Hospital in Indore, set up under a public-private partnership with Sri Aurobindo Hospital, is therefore an important addition to Madhya Pradesh’s healthcare infrastructure. Such technology can help doctors detect and assess serious conditions, including cancer, more quickly and plan treatment accordingly.

The centre has been established in the new cancer hospital block of the government-run MY Hospital. Similar advanced centres are being set up at medical colleges in Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Rewa. If these facilities function smoothly, patients will not need to travel outside the state for advanced diagnostic tests, saving both time and money.

The value of such a centre will depend on access and affordability. Advanced machines are useful only when patients can actually reach them, receive timely appointments and are not burdened by high costs. Government hospitals must ensure that the facility serves ordinary patients, not only those who can afford private care. Clear referral systems, trained technicians and regular maintenance are equally important.

The Chief Minister has said that the centre will help in the quick diagnosis and treatment of serious diseases and that cancer patients will no longer need to go elsewhere for treatment. This is a significant promise. It should be matched by adequate specialists, nursing staff, medicines and follow-up care. A scan can identify a problem, but treatment becomes meaningful only when the full chain of care is available.

The planned robotic surgery centre at MY Hospital within the next three months reflects the growing role of advanced medical technology. Such developments can improve treatment options, but they also require skilled personnel, strict safety standards and careful use of public resources. Technology should strengthen the public health system, not remain confined to a few large institutions.

Indore’s new PET CT facility is a welcome step towards strengthening advanced healthcare in Madhya Pradesh. Its real success will be measured by whether patients from across the state can access timely, affordable and high-quality diagnosis and treatment.
