Dehradun, September 24, 2026: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami flagged in four successful mountaineering expeditions conducted by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, at the Chief Minister’s Camp Office.
One of the expeditions was jointly conducted by NIM and the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Pahalgam.
Dhami congratulated the mountaineers and praised their courage, discipline, technical expertise and teamwork in challenging high-altitude conditions. He said their achievements would encourage young people in Uttarakhand and across India to take up adventure activities.
Aconcagua Expedition
The joint NIM–JIM&WS expedition to Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, which rises to 6,961 metres, was led by Colonel Hem Chandra Singh.
The six-member team successfully reached the summit on February 22, 2026. The expedition had earlier been flagged off from South Block in New Delhi by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Three Summits in the Nun–Kun Range
The NIM Nun–Kun Expedition 2026 was led by NIM Principal Colonel S. S. Rajpurohit.
The team first summited Mount Kun, at an altitude of 7,077 metres, on August 15, 2026, making the achievement especially significant as it was accomplished on Independence Day.
The expedition continued with successful ascents of:
- Mount Delta-41: 5,908 metres, on August 26, 2026.
- Mount Nun: 7,135 metres, on August 31, 2026.
The team thus achieved the notable feat of summiting three peaks in the Nun–Kun mountain range during a single expedition.
Training and Youth Development
Dhami said NIM has established an important reputation in mountaineering, adventure sports, youth development and high-altitude Himalayan training.
Through advanced training programmes, the institute equips young people with mountaineering and adventure skills while also developing courage, leadership, discipline and the ability to respond to difficult conditions.
He said Uttarakhand’s geography offers enormous potential for mountaineering and adventure tourism. Achievements such as these can encourage more young people to participate in adventure sports and further strengthen Uttarakhand’s identity nationally and internationally.
Special Principal Secretary for Sports and Youth Welfare Amit Kumar Sinha, NIM Principal Colonel S. S. Rajpurohit, JIM&WS Principal Colonel Hem Chandra Singh, Captain G. Santosh Kumar, NIM officials and members of the mountaineering expeditions attended the programme.
