The Balram Krishi Mahotsav in Narmadapuram reflects the importance of placing farmers at the centre of agricultural policy. Farmers need more than seeds, fertilisers and irrigation. A strong agricultural system must support farmers from the field to the market and from production to payment.
The proposed Kavach Yojana is a significant step for farmers who have been unable to obtain fresh loans or access government schemes because of irregularities in old cooperative accounts or delays in investigations. Bringing such farmers back into the formal credit system can reduce their financial stress and help them continue farming with confidence.
The inclusion of mustard and paddy under the Bhavantar scheme is also a welcome decision. Market uncertainty often discourages farmers from adopting new crops. Income protection during periods of low prices can encourage crop diversification and provide greater security to farming families.
The emphasis on horticulture, dairy, fisheries, natural farming and food processing is equally important. Fruit orchards, nurseries, polyhouses and food processing units can provide additional sources of income and reduce farmers’ dependence on a single crop. Such diversification can make agriculture more stable and profitable.
However, the success of these initiatives will depend on their effective implementation. Farmers must receive timely information, easy access to credit and benefits, transparent procurement and quick resolution of their problems. Special attention should be given to small and marginal farmers who often face the greatest difficulties in accessing government support.
The Balram Krishi Mahotsav can become more than an awareness programme if it continues to provide a platform for direct dialogue, expert guidance and practical solutions. When farmers receive secure credit, reliable markets, modern technology and administrative support, agriculture can become a stronger foundation for rural prosperity.
