A durable home made of brick and mortar is more than just shelter; it is also about dignity, security, and a platform for success. The ceremony in which the beneficiaries are presented with the symbolic keys to their newly-built houses during the Sushasan Tihar 2026 event is testament to this. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin scheme, Balod district has successfully built 48,421 out of 54,151 sanctioned houses; this means that they have almost met 90% of the sanctioned target.
The timely transfer of funds plays an important role here as well. The recently distributed Fund Transfer Orders worth Rs 10.12 crore to 3,278 beneficiaries by way of Direct Benefit Transfer from Balod district would help speed up construction. The frequent contact with the beneficiaries and the tradition of providing them with completion certificates on camp sites contribute significantly to this as well.
However, the task is far from completed. It is important that the remaining 5,730 houses are constructed without any budget overruns or lowering of standards. There are three main concerns here. Firstly, the process should be conducted in a transparent fashion with efficient use of resources through on-ground monitoring. Secondly, the provision of housing should come along with other amenities such as potable drinking water, sanitation facilities, electricity supply and roads so that the improved living conditions can actually lead to better health and prosperity. Lastly, efforts should be made to adopt techniques of resilient housing, as well as simple steps like providing soak pits and rain water harvesting.
Housing has wider impacts than just being an immediate benefit for people. Having proper shelters means that children can attend school while the economic activity of women is encouraged; further, the necessity for seasonal migration is lessened when individuals are able to stay put in productive areas.
The near completion ratio of Balod deserves praise. The delivery of the remaining houses in terms of quality, along with access to services, shall turn this achievement into an accomplishment that benefits welfare. If this administration remains committed to financial prudence and quality assurance, their effort towards housing can serve as a benchmark of how program implementation ensures dignity for the rural populace.
