The recent events have prompted concerns about the resurgence of underworld extortion and murder methods.
Following the murder of former minister Baba Siddiqui in Mumbai last month and repeated threats against actor Salman Khan, another Bollywood icon has received death threats and extortion demands. The Bandra police station received a call demanding Shah Rukh Khan pay Rs 50 lakh or face repercussions. The Mumbai Police is treating the threat seriously.
The recent events have raised concerns about the resurgence of the underworld mafia’s methods of extortion and killings, which were previously associated with gang wars in the 1990s and 2000s. It is unclear how Don Lawrence Bishnoi, allegedly responsible for Siddiqui’s murder, can plan and execute this wave of terror from behind bars in Gujarat.Although the underworld has resurfaced, some long-time watchers feel it was never completely eradicated from the city’s map. Although the names and tactics of the underworld evolved with the modern economy and technology, it cannot be said that it was completely eradicated. The company has a long-standing interest in Bollywood’s glamour industry, with celebrities serving as prominent targets. Bishnoi’s claimed exploits have made him a cult figure among young men, highlighting the ongoing dominance of crime and mafia-style activities in society.
However, unlike in the past, this time it is about more than just domination and business interests; according to accounts available, it has to do with Bollywood’s politicization. Although the Khans and other icons do not rely on the local police for protection, real-life death threats are rarely as simple to handle as they appear on screen, even with trusted inner rings of security.
