Bhopal, January 19, 2025: Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has emphasized that Simhastha Mahakumbh-2028 will not only strengthen Ujjain’s spiritual identity but also transform it into a major global religious tourism destination. He highlighted that Simhastha Mahakumbh is a remarkable example of tradition and management, serving as a platform to provide direction and purpose to society.


Preparations for Simhastha-2028: A Vision for the Future

The Madhya Pradesh government has already commenced preparations for the Simhastha Mahakumbh, aiming to deliver a seamless and enriching experience for devotees and tourists alike. The focus is on sustainable infrastructure, environmental balance, and enhanced facilities.

Key Projects:

  1. Revitalization of the Shipra River:
    Projects such as the Sewerkhedi-Silarkhedi, Kanh Closed Duct, and Hariyakhedi initiatives are underway. Additionally, 18 barrages and stop dams are being constructed to ensure clean water flows in the Shipra River throughout the year.
  2. Infrastructure Development:
    ₹5,955 crore has been allocated for 19 major projects focusing on roads, water supply, sewage systems, electricity, and parks.
  3. Religious Facilities:
    Permanent amenities for Akharas (religious orders) and ashrams will be developed to cater to devotees’ needs.

Transport and Traffic: Streamlined Planning

Given the anticipated influx of millions of devotees, transportation and traffic management are a top priority for the state government.

  • Dedicated Railway Coordination Cell:
    A special cell will be established to ensure smooth communication and coordination with railway officials.
  • Road Upgradation Projects:
    A ₹2,312 crore project to upgrade roads connecting Ujjain and Indore has been approved to enhance connectivity for pilgrims.
  • Advanced Technologies for Management:
    Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drone technology will be deployed for crowd and traffic management, learning from successful practices in Prayagraj and Haridwar Kumbh festivals.

Boosting Religious Tourism

Dr. Yadav stated that Simhastha is not just a religious event but an opportunity to place Ujjain on the global map as a center of cultural and religious tourism.

  • Collaboration with Experts:
    Companies and startups involved in the management of Prayagraj and Haridwar Kumbh festivals will be invited for a special conference in Ujjain to share their expertise.
  • Enhanced Pilgrim Facilities:
    Renovation and construction of dharamshalas (pilgrim accommodations), along with improved cleanliness and greenery, will be prioritized.

Environmental Sustainability and Long-Term Goals

The government aims to ensure that Ujjain’s ecological balance and water resources remain intact even after Simhastha-2028.

  • Sustainable Development:
    Permanent infrastructure projects will be implemented through land-pooling schemes by the Ujjain Development Authority.
  • Shipra River Conservation:
    Steps are being taken to ensure the river remains clean and perennial, symbolizing its sacred status.

A Global Perspective

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described Kumbh Mela as a remarkable example of tradition and management that the world can adopt as a case study. Aligning with this vision, Dr. Yadav plans to integrate modern technology with India’s rich cultural heritage during Simhastha-2028.
