Robert Vadra, the husband of Priyanka Gandhi, the daughter of former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, is a lesser-known person in India. Vadra’s marriage drew negative attention at times. His closeness with the Congress’ first family, particularly under the United Progressive Alliance government, shaped his public and media image. During the 2011-12 anti-corruption campaign, Vadra, a businessman, faced scrutiny and suspicions of wrongdoing for acquiring land at low rates. Despite campaigning for his mother-in-law and brother-in-law Rahul Gandhi throughout elections, he has not been actively involved in politics till recently. Vadra has expressed his willingness to run for the Amethi seat in the general election, demonstrating his commitment to public life. It’s unclear if he’s suited for the fast-paced nature of elections and politics, since many professional politicians struggle to meet these requirements. Although Vadra’s decision to enter the political arena is between him and his family, there are more concerns that remain unanswered.
What precisely does Vadra bring to the table? Did he overreach in hoping for a ticket from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, which was regarded the Gandhi-Congress seat till Rahul Gandhi’s loss by Smriti Irani (BJP) in 2019? Vadra is recognised for his fighting abilities, but lacks political experience. Perhaps he has not got the opportunity to do so. Priyanka, his flamboyant wife, is widely regarded as a natural politician who has gained popularity through road agitations and fiery speeches during elections, surpassing her brother Rahul. It’s unclear if Vadra played a role in her choice to focus on UP and not run for election. However, if he runs and she doesn’t, it would be a source of contention. Can he win Amethi? Given the BJP’s current dominance, this is a difficult topic to answer. If Vadra is nominated by Congress and ultimately elected, he would have made history. It’s unclear if he’s a positive or negative asset for the Gandhis right now.
