Currently, train services operate between Srinagar and Sangaldan. However, with the completion of the final stretch of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the railway line from Sangaldan to Katra will soon become operational, making way for a direct Vande Bharat service.

The USBRL Project: A Milestone in Indian Rail Infrastructure

The USBRL project has been a transformative initiative aimed at connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country. The timeline of its progress includes:

  • 2009: Qazigund-Baramulla section inaugurated
  • 2013: 18-km Banihal-Qazigund section opened
  • 2014: 25-km Udhampur-Katra section completed
  • 2023: Banihal to Sangaldan section became operational
  • 2024: Sangaldan to Katra section expected to be completed soon

One of the most remarkable engineering feats of this project is the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest rail arch bridge. Along with numerous tunnels, bridges, and breathtaking valley views, the USBRL project is set to make rail travel in the region more efficient and enjoyable.

With this ambitious railway expansion, the dream of seamless connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir is finally becoming a reality, marking a new chapter in India’s railway history.
