Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the monitoring system for 9 railway stations in the Prayagraj region, equipped with CCTV cameras for real-time surveillance during the Maha Kumbh 2025. A booklet with information in 22 Indian languages and English was also launched to aid travelers. The Railway Minister further announced the commencement of public announcements in 12 Indian languages at Prayagraj Junction.

Speaking to the media, Vaishnaw emphasized the cultural significance of Maha Kumbh and outlined the extensive arrangements made by Indian Railways to accommodate the anticipated surge in passenger traffic.


Unprecedented Rail Operations

Indian Railways has committed to running 10,000 regular trains and 3,100+ special trains, a 4.5x increase compared to the last Kumbh. The initiative aims to ensure a seamless travel experience for the expected influx of over 40 crore pilgrims, including international visitors from over 100 countries.


Integrated Monitoring Systems

  • 1,186 CCTV cameras installed across stations, with 5-tier monitoring from station-level control rooms to a dedicated War Room at the Railway Board.
  • 24×7 monitoring teams comprising senior officials in areas such as operations, security, and communication will manage the smooth functioning of train services and passenger facilities.

Infrastructure Upgrades in the Prayagraj Region

To meet the demands of Maha Kumbh, Indian Railways has carried out extensive infrastructure upgrades:

  1. Seven new platforms, bringing the total to 48 platforms across 9 stations.
  2. Doubling of Varanasi-Madhosingh-Prayagraj and Phaphamau-Janghai lines.
  3. 17 new temporary shelters, increasing capacity to accommodate 1,10,000 passengers.
  4. Construction of 21 new Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs).

Additionally, color-coded holding areas and direction-wise tickets have been introduced for better crowd management.


Key Stations Enhanced for Maha Kumbh

The 9 railway stations in the Prayagraj region prepared for Maha Kumbh 2025 include:

  1. Prayagraj Junction
  2. Naini Junction
  3. Prayagraj Chheoki
  4. Subedarganj
  5. Prayagraj Sangam
  6. Prayag Junction
  7. Phaphamau Junction
  8. Prayagraj Rambagh
  9. Jhunsi Station

Special features include designated entry gates for reserved and unreserved passengers, improved road connectivity, and satellite station development at Subedarganj.

Digital Kumbh Initiatives

  • A barcode-based UTS ticketing system has been launched for paperless travel.
  • Announcements will be made in 22 languages, ensuring ease of access for travelers from across India.
  • 764 new cameras, including 116 facial recognition cameras, have been installed for enhanced security.

Medical and Security Measures

  • 13,000+ railway staff and 10,000 GRP personnel will be deployed to manage the event.
  • 24×7 medical observation rooms, staffed with doctors and medical teams, will be operational at all stations.
  • First-aid booths have been set up on every platform, ensuring prompt medical attention.

Beautification and Cultural Promotion

To showcase the grandeur of Maha Kumbh, the walls of all stations in the region have been adorned with Kumbh-themed paintings covering over 20,000 sq. meters. Travelers will also find colored foot markers to help navigate stations easily.

  1. Paush Purnima: January 13, 2025
  2. Makar Sankranti: January 14, 2025
  3. Mauni Amavasya: January 29, 2025

  5. Magh Purnima: February 12, 2025
  6. Maha Shivratri: February 26, 2025
