New Delhi, December 7, 2024: In light of the worsening situation in Syria, the Indian government has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid visiting the country until further notice. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also emphasized that Indian nationals currently in Syria should establish and maintain contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus for any necessary assistance.
Indian citizens in Syria can reach the embassy through its emergency helpline (+963 993385973) or via email at hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in.
Instructions for Indians in Syria
The advisory suggests that those who are in a position to leave Syria should do so promptly by utilizing available commercial flight options. For individuals unable to depart immediately, the government has urged maximum caution and advised them to minimize travel and stay in safe locations.
Indian nationals have been asked to prioritize their safety and remain alert in light of the uncertain circumstances in the region.
Context Behind the Advisory
The advisory was prompted by rising violence in Syria, following an attack by the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces last week. The clashes have led to increased instability and escalated tensions across the region.
In response, the Indian government has taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety and security of its citizens, urging them to remain vigilant and proactive.
