Dehradun, October 21, 2026: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced plans to begin recruitment for around 1,600 vacant police posts and double the annual allocation for essential police-station requirements from ₹4 crore to ₹8 crore during a Police Commemoration Day ceremony at Police Lines in Dehradun.
The Chief Minister paid tribute to police and paramilitary personnel who died in the line of duty and honoured the families of fallen police personnel.
He said 154 personnel across the country had made the supreme sacrifice over the past year, including Uttarakhand Police Sub-Inspector Vinod Kumar. Their sacrifice, he said, belongs to the entire nation.
Recruitment, Equipment and Welfare Measures
Dhami outlined measures to strengthen policing and improve living and working conditions for personnel. Alongside the proposed recruitment, he announced a review of sanctioned posts and staffing arrangements at police stations and outposts according to operational needs.
Investigating officers will be provided with modern investigation kits, while the increased station budget is intended to meet essential requirements.
Other announcements included improvements to Police Modern Schools across Uttarakhand, construction of a transit hostel and multistorey barracks for police personnel in Dehradun, and an upgrade of the city’s police hospital.
Dhami said police personnel routinely spend festivals away from their families to protect the public. Uttarakhand’s difficult terrain and recurring disasters make their responsibilities particularly demanding, he added.
Focus on Cybercrime and Drug Trafficking
The Chief Minister identified drug trafficking and cybercrime as major challenges requiring sustained action.
He said a three-tier Anti-Narcotics Task Force has been constituted and that strict action is being taken against drug traffickers under the government’s Drug-Free Uttarakhand initiative.
On cybercrime, Dhami called for better training, modern technology and closer coordination with other agencies. Police must stay ahead of criminals exploiting the internet and artificial intelligence, he said.
A State Cyber Crime Coordination Centre is under construction at an estimated cost of ₹32 crore, he added. Quick-response teams have also been formed under women’s help desks at every police station to strengthen women’s safety.
Pilgrimage Management and Recognition
Dhami praised Uttarakhand Police for managing security and movement during major religious gatherings. He said police had helped facilitate the journeys of approximately five crore Kanwar pilgrims this year and more than 60 lakh Char Dham pilgrims so far.
According to the Chief Minister, 319 police personnel have received medals and commendation insignia for distinguished service this year. He also described Uttarakhand Police’s nomination for the President’s Police Colours as a matter of pride for the state.
Housing, Promotions and Infrastructure
Reviewing welfare measures, Dhami said the police housing satisfaction rate had risen from 18% to 22%, with a target of reaching 30%.
He also highlighted the following developments:
- Promotions for 785 police personnel this year.
- Direct recruitment of 1,573 civil police constables and 370 PAC constables.
- Completion of recruitment for 222 posts covering sub-inspectors, platoon commanders and fire service second officers.
- Appointments for 24 dependants of deceased police personnel.
- Release of more than ₹58 crore this financial year for police stations, fire stations, barracks, mess facilities and other workplaces.
Dhami said cashless medical treatment is being provided to police personnel and stressed the need for regular stress-management programmes.
Haridwar MP and former Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Cabinet Minister Khajan Das, Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Bansal, Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan, Home Secretary Shailesh Bagoli, Director General of Police Deepam Seth and other senior officials attended the ceremony.
