Yunus is highly respected among academics and social activists worldwide.

In 2007, Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus planned to establish his own political party, but did not proceed. After Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country, a Nobel laureate known for his work in micro-finance, particularly the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, now leads the interim government. Yunus faces multiple challenges, including reducing violence in the short time, restoring stability in the weeks ahead, and ensuring free and fair elections in the long run.

Yunus was chosen by student organizations who have been protesting staged elections in January that reinstated Hasina’s dictatorial rule. Her orders to shoot-at-sight, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of protestors, have left a deep mark on a nation that had previously experienced violent uprisings and similar deaths in 1970-71, before being liberated with India’s help. Yunus referred to this as “second independence” after arriving in Dhaka from Paris.

The Hasina government brought over 100 criminal complaints against him, and he was sentenced to six months in jail. He claimed the allegations were politically motivated and was released on bail. He has been freed of them today.
Yunus is highly respected by academics and social sector activists worldwide. His pioneering work has facilitated international linkages.

Yunus is in a unique position to shape his country’s future, despite the challenges he faces. As the face of Bangladesh’s interim administration, he will need to use his academic expertise, patience, and problem-solving skills. He plans to rely on support from friends and supporters outside Bangladesh to help him succeed. It remains to be seen if India, which is known for its friendly relationship with Hasina, will join in.
