Keeping mandis open is a practical farmer-first step

During harvest season, time matters to a farmer. Crops need to be sold quickly so that payments can be received and the next round of expenses can be managed. If mandis remain closed on holidays, farmers may have to wait for the next working day, leading to delay, extra travel and avoidable hardship.

The Madhya Pradesh government’s decision to keep mandis open on holidays for soybean and maize farmers addresses this practical need. With large arrivals of notified agricultural produce currently taking place, the order directs joint directors of the Mandi Board to ensure that marketing activities continue in mandi and sub-mandi premises even on holidays.

The decision reflects a simple principle: market access should match the rhythm of the harvest, not the convenience of the administrative calendar. When farmers bring their produce to a mandi, they should be able to sell it without unnecessary waiting. This is especially important for perishable or bulky produce, where delays can increase costs and reduce returns.

Keeping mandis open will require proper coordination. Officials must ensure that licensed traders are available, weighing and payment systems function smoothly, and adequate staff are present. Farmers should not face crowding, confusion or delays merely because the mandi is operating on a holiday.

The larger goal must be fair and timely payment for farmers’ produce. Open mandis are a positive step, but they should be supported by transparent weighing, prompt payment and adequate storage arrangements. Farmers should also receive clear information about procurement arrangements and market timings.

This order is a useful example of governance that responds to a real seasonal need. If implemented effectively, it can reduce inconvenience for soybean and maize farmers and help ensure that their hard work receives a fair price without avoidable delay.
