From Reservoir to Rural Prosperity

The transformation of the Shankargarh reservoir shows how scientific planning and collective effort can turn a natural resource into a lasting source of livelihood. Once known only as a water body, the 10.70 hectare reservoir is now supporting income, employment and economic independence through modern cage fish farming.

The Blue Line Fishermen Cooperative Society adopted cage culture with support from the fisheries department and the Prime Minister Matsya Sampada Yojana. By installing 54 cages and scientifically raising tilapia and pangasius, the 23 member cooperative has moved beyond the limitations of traditional fishing.

The results are impressive. The cooperative produces around 30 to 40 tonnes of fish and earns approximately 45 to 50 lakh Rupees. After meeting the costs of feed, seed, labour, medicines and management, it earns a net profit of about 8 to 12 lakh Rupees. Each member receives a dividend ranging from around 34,000 to 52,000 Rupees.

The benefits extend beyond the cooperative. More than 20 people have found direct or indirect employment in feeding, monitoring, harvesting, sorting, transportation and marketing. This shows how one organised activity can create a wider rural economic chain.

The success of the project rests on several factors: quality fish seed, balanced feed, water quality testing, health monitoring, technical training and regular management. Government assistance becomes truly valuable when beneficiaries receive not only infrastructure, but also the knowledge required to use it effectively.

The story of the Blue Line Cooperative also highlights the strength of cooperation. By working together, members were able to access technology, share responsibilities and distribute benefits. Their experience can inspire other communities to explore fisheries as a viable and organised enterprise.

The Shankargarh reservoir proves that water bodies are not merely sources of water. With scientific use, proper training and institutional support, they can become centres of employment, income and rural self reliance.
