By investing in solar lighting and drinking water systems, the district is improving safety, convenience and the quality of rural life.
The installation of nine solar high mast systems at important roads and public locations will make night travel safer. Better lighting on national highways and near the primary health centre in Pasan will benefit thousands of travellers, patients, families and health workers. Such infrastructure may appear simple, but it can make a major difference in areas where darkness often creates risks and restricts movement.
The installation of solar dual pumps at 20 remote locations is equally significant. Nearly 500 families will gain access to clean and safe drinking water within their villages, reducing the need to travel long distances. This will especially benefit women, who often bear the responsibility of collecting water and lose valuable time in the process.
The decision to repair 50 solar dual pumps that have stopped working after the completion of their warranty period is a welcome example of responsible planning. Building infrastructure is not enough. Its maintenance and continued operation are equally important. Restoring these pumps will help ensure that earlier investments continue to serve rural communities.
The use of solar energy makes the initiative more sustainable. It reduces dependence on conventional electricity and offers a practical solution for remote villages where regular power supply may be difficult. However, local bodies should also be given the training and resources required for timely maintenance and community monitoring.
