New Doors of Development to Open in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan
MoU Signed in the Presence of the Prime Minister in Jaipur
A Historic Day for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan: Chief Minister Dr. Yadav

Bhopal, December 17, 2024, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has stated that the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Link Project will make both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan “Sujalam-Sufalam” (abundant in water). Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony in Jaipur, which marks the agreement between the central government, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, the Prime Minister expressed that this agreement is not just a simple memorandum; it will be remembered for decades to come. He congratulated the governments and the people of both states for this historic achievement and hoped the project would progress without delay and be completed ahead of schedule.

The Prime Minister was addressing a gathering on the completion of one year of the Rajasthan Government’s tenure and the tripartite agreement for the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Link Project. Union Minister for Jal Shakti Shri C.R. Patil and Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav of Madhya Pradesh were also present at the event. During the ceremony, the MoU was signed by representatives from the central, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan governments. The event also included a symbolic ritual in which water from the Chambal River, provided by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, and water from the Kalisindh and Parvati rivers, symbolizing the three rivers involved in the project, was poured into a large vessel.

Prime Minister Modi recalled the vision of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had conceptualized the idea of linking rivers, and the committee he formed for the purpose. Despite the initial efforts, previous governments failed to move the project forward, creating unnecessary complications. However, Modi’s government follows a policy of dialogue over dispute, and cooperation over conflict. He emphasized that the signing of this MoU is a result of this approach. The project will link the Chambal River with its tributaries Parvati and Kalisindh, which will open new avenues for development in both states.

The Prime Minister further highlighted that linking rivers can resolve both flood and drought problems. Water is a vital resource, and by linking rivers, it can rejuvenate dry rivers, like the Sabarmati, which was once dry but has now come back to life. He assured that the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Link Project will ensure sufficient water for irrigation and drinking water in both states.

Water Conservation Campaign: Prime Minister Modi also mentioned the ongoing Rainwater Harvesting initiative under Union Water Power Minister Shri C.R. Patil’s leadership, which aims to conserve every drop of rainwater. He urged citizens to take responsibility for water conservation and participate in the “One Tree for Mother Earth” campaign, which honors both Mother Earth and Mother.

Chief Minister Dr. Yadav’s Remarks:
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav described the day as historic for both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. After 20 years of waiting, the project is finally becoming a reality, thanks to the efforts of Prime Minister Modi. Dr. Yadav praised the Prime Minister for bringing this unique project to life, describing him as a modern-day Bhagirath, whose efforts have paved the way for immense development in both states.

Project Funding Details:
The total cost of the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Link Project is estimated at ₹72,000 crores, with Madhya Pradesh contributing ₹35,000 crores and Rajasthan contributing ₹37,000 crores. The central government will bear 90% of the total cost, with the remaining 10% to be borne by the states. The project will have a water storage capacity of 1908.83 million cubic meters. Additionally, 172 million cubic meters of water will be reserved for drinking water and industrial use.

The project will include the construction of 21 dams and barrages. It will ensure adequate water supply for drinking and irrigation in various regions of Western Madhya Pradesh, including Sheopur, Bhind, Morena, Shivpuri, Guna, as well as cities like Indore, Ujjain, and Shajapur. In total, the project will benefit 3,217 villages, with 6,13,520 hectares of land in Malwa and Chambal regions benefiting from irrigation. Additionally, 40 million people will have access to drinking water.

The Chambal Right Main Canal and its distribution system, which is nearly 60 years old, will be modernized, ensuring water availability for farmers in Bhind, Morena, and Sheopur districts according to their demands.
