Saving Time and Improving Health Conditions

Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission Transform Jamdei Village

Surajpur, December 17, 2024 In Surajpur district’s Jamdei village, the Government of India’s ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission has brought a revolutionary change by addressing the drinking water crisis. With a total investment of ₹74.29 lakh, the project includes two elevated water tanks with capacities of 85 KL and 35 KL and two solar-based systems of 5000 liters each, ensuring water supply to 526 households in the village. The mission aims to provide clean drinking water to every rural household and certify villages as “Har Ghar Jal.”

Similarly, the Swachh Bharat Mission has been successfully implemented in Jamdei to make the village an ODF Plus Model Gram, ensuring complete sanitation and cleanliness.

Before the Mission: Struggles of the Villagers

Before the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission, villagers relied primarily on handpumps and wells to meet their daily water needs. However, the quality of this water was often questionable, leading to frequent waterborne diseases. Fetching water was a time-consuming task, particularly for women, who had to queue up for hours at handpumps. The situation worsened during summers when the handpumps ran dry, causing severe hardship.

Impact on Daily Lives

Gulabi, a resident of School Para, shared her experience: “We used to face immense difficulties accessing clean drinking water. Since the Jal Jeevan Mission installed tap water in our homes, we now receive water twice a day for two hours each time. This provides enough water for our entire family. We no longer have to depend on handpumps or wells, which saves us a lot of time. Now, we can focus on other household tasks and spend more time nurturing our children.”

She, along with other villagers, expressed gratitude to the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Government of India, and Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai for addressing their long-standing issues.

Swachh Bharat Mission’s Contribution

Apart from providing clean water, the Swachh Bharat Mission, which has been operational in the village for over six years, has transformed Jamdei into an ODF Plus Model Village. Key initiatives under this mission include:

  • Household Toilets for all families
  • Community Soak Pits at handpump locations
  • NABARD Tanks and Gauthan Projects
  • Running Water Facilities in government buildings
  • Community Toilets and private toilets for beneficiaries
  • Waste Collection and Management through garbage rickshaws, managed by Self-Help Groups

A New Dawn for Jamdei

The combined efforts of the Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission have brought a positive transformation to Jamdei village. Villagers now enjoy access to clean drinking water, improved sanitation facilities, and a cleaner environment, ensuring better health and time efficiency.

This remarkable progress has uplifted the lives of residents, making them hopeful for a brighter and sustainable future. The success of these missions in Jamdei stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to empowering rural communities and improving their quality of life.
