Interstate River Project Moves Forward, Agreement with Maharashtra Soon
Bhopal, February 7, 2025 – Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced that the Tapti Basin Mega Recharge Project will be the world’s largest groundwater recharge initiative. The obstacles in this interstate joint project have been resolved, and the Madhya Pradesh government is moving towards a formal agreement with Maharashtra soon. A discussion with the Union Jal Shakti Minister and Maharashtra CM will be held in Bhopal to finalize the agreement.

Addressing officials at a high-level meeting, CM Yadav emphasized that Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra will collaborate to divide the Tapti River into three streams to maximize water utilization for irrigation. The project aims to ensure every inch of agricultural land receives adequate water supply.
Key Highlights of the Tapti Basin Mega Recharge Project:
- Total Water Utilization: 31.13 TMC
- Madhya Pradesh’s share: 11.76 TMC
- Maharashtra’s share: 19.36 TMC
- Land to be utilized: 3,362 hectares in Madhya Pradesh
- Irrigation Benefits:
- Madhya Pradesh: 1,23,082 hectares (Burhanpur & Khandwa districts)
- Maharashtra: 2,34,706 hectares
- No displacement of villages, eliminating rehabilitation concerns
CM Yadav also announced that the state will push for the project’s national status. He affirmed that Madhya Pradesh is actively resolving long-pending interstate water-sharing disputes in the national interest. He cited the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal project with Rajasthan and the Ken-Betwa project with Uttar Pradesh as successful examples.
Additionally, the Kanhan sub-basin project will supply water to Nagpur while boosting irrigation in Chhindwara district, demonstrating Madhya Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable water management.
The historic Tapti Basin agreement with Maharashtra will not only resolve water issues for farmers and industries but also strengthen interstate cooperation, CM Yadav concluded.
