Raipur, December 27, 2024: Hemabati Nag, who lost her parents and became completely orphaned at a young age, has achieved an extraordinary milestone that inspires millions. On December 26, 2024, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, Hemabati was honored with the prestigious Prime Minister’s National Child Award by President Smt. Droupadi Murmu.
For the past five years, Hemabati has been residing at the Girls’ Home in Kondagaon, managed by the Chhattisgarh State Child Welfare Council. During her time there, she not only mastered the art of judo but also made a mark in numerous regional and national competitions, winning multiple medals. This recognition is a testament to her unwavering determination and resilience.
The news of Hemabati’s remarkable accomplishment has brought joy to the people of Chhattisgarh, particularly in the forested areas of Kondagaon district. Recently, the Bastar Olympics witnessed the participation of over 1.5 lakh youths from seven districts of the Bastar division. Amidst this, Hemabati has emerged as a role model for the youth of the Bastar region.
Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai extended his congratulations to Hemabati, stating, “Her achievement is a matter of pride for all Chhattisgarh residents. Despite facing severe challenges, Hemabati displayed extraordinary courage and perseverance. Her success at events like Khelo India National Games, where she earned gold, silver, and bronze medals, has brought glory to the state. The Chhattisgarh government is committed to supporting such talented children and realizing their dreams. Hemabati’s journey is a beacon of hope and inspiration for other girls in the state.”
Hemabati’s story reflects the resilience of the human spirit. After losing her parents at a tender age, she was left homeless and destitute, with no shelter or guidance. In August 2020, at the age of 11, she was placed in the Kondagaon Girls’ Home by the District Child Protection Unit and the Department of Women and Child Development. Weighing only 22 kilograms at the time, her physical and mental state was fragile. The home provided her with counseling, health care, and education, setting the foundation for her remarkable journey.
With support from the ITBP 41st Battalion, Hemabati began judo training and quickly excelled. Her dedication and grit have made her an accomplished athlete. She is currently studying in Class 10 at the Swami Atmanand Hindi Medium Excellent School in Kondagaon while continuing her judo training.
Hemabati’s accolades include:
- 2021: Gold medal in the Sub-Junior 28 kg category at the Open Judo Championship, Chandigarh.
- 2022: Bronze medal at the regional Khelo India competition and gold at the state-level sports meet.
- 2023: Fifth position at the Khelo India National Tournament in Bhopal and a bronze medal at the National School Games.
- 2024: Bronze medals at the regional Khelo India competition in Nashik and the National School Judo Competition.
Today, Hemabati is a symbol of hope and perseverance. Living at the Kondagaon Girls’ Home, she continues to excel in her studies and judo training, proving that with determination and support, any challenge can be overcome.
