The district administration of Dantewada has taken a significant step towards enhancing the education and self-reliance of visually impaired children by introducing the revolutionary “Annie Device.” This smart learning tool, designed specifically for children with visual impairments, is transforming how they learn Braille, the essential script for reading and writing for the visually impaired.
What is Annie Device?
Annie Device is an advanced educational tool equipped with touch and audio features. It helps visually impaired children recognize and write Braille characters. Through an interactive experience, the device bridges the gap between traditional Braille learning and modern technology.

The Annie Device is part of the ongoing efforts of the “Saksham” Residential School in Jawanga, Dantewada. This institution, established in 2013, is the first of its kind in Chhattisgarh, catering to the diverse needs of differently-abled children. Currently, it houses 94 girls and 90 boys, including 16 girls and 12 boys who are visually impaired.
The introduction of the Annie Device is a monumental step in enhancing the learning experience of these children. Teachers at the school, such as Mr. Amit Yadav, who has been teaching Braille since 2015, express their gratitude for this innovation. He notes that while earlier Braille machines allowed basic writing, the Annie Device takes learning to the next level with interactive and advanced features.

The Saksham School provides children with not only academic education but also life skills to boost their confidence. The students attend regular schools in the morning and participate in specialized training sessions in the afternoon. These sessions are tailored to their unique needs, ensuring holistic development.
