You might have been wondering why freshly married men suddenly start growing a sized paunch. In fact, a ‘beer belly’ has become the badge for most married men. Well, here is the bad news for men, Relationship weight gain is very real, so stop pretending like your old jeans fit comfortably.
This unfortunate fact has been confirmed by a new study conducted at the University of Queensland in Australia. Researchers analyzed 10 years-worth of data from over 15,000 people, and found that couples in happy relationships weighed an average of 13 pounds more than single folk, and had an average weight gain of 4 pounds per year.
See, that’s what all the late night binge eating and lying idly in bed together after some cuddling will do to you.
Again, when you’ve been dating someone for a while, you don’t really have the spur to go the gym anymore because you already have someone who’ll sleep with you in spite of your portliness.
Gradually, indolence creeps in. you’d rather order and guzzle two bottles of wine together while binge watching Netflix than go out and engage in activity… and before you know it, boom! You have gained more extra pounds.
In summary, what happens is, when you find love, that’s when you simultaneously lose all motivation to stay fit. It’s like the unspoken rule of relationships.
But it’s not all bad news, there is some good news too: The study also found that, compared to singles, people in relationships tend to develop healthier habits overall and smoke less, eat less fast food, and consume more fruits and vegetables. Regardless, most couples gain extra-weight over the course of the relationship and are more likely to grow plumpy.
In case you need more proof to blame your ‘father figure’ on your wife or girlfriend, a seperate study from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas followed nearly 200 newlyweds for four years, and came to the same conclusion: Being in a relationship — a happy one, specifically — will make you fat. Well, not fat per se, but the weight gain is substantial.
Head researcher Andrea Meltzer says; “Satisfaction is positively associated with weight gain,…. “Spouses who are more satisfied tend to gain more weight, and spouses who are less satisfied tend to gain less weight.”
In other words, the happier you are with your partner, the more podgy you are likely to get. Aww! Isn’t that kinda cute when you think about it?
Here is the sign, if you’re in a relationship and you’re packing on the pounds, don’t be sad. It only means you’re happy with your special lady, and that’s a beautiful thing. But a little consciousness will motivate you to hit the gym more often, or fix up your diet instead of diving head first into the delicious cakes and cookies she bakes you. All you need to stay fit is ‘do everything in moderation’.
