So I and my friends decided to gather the dirt in our surrounding so as to properly dispose them where they belong. Amidst the dirt we are carefully gathering is a great heap of periwinkle shells that were before now littered all over the place. Going by the height of the heap one could say we gathered close to 10,000 shells. Funny right? yeah that’s cos we eat much of it over here in the south south region where we have rivers, making it possible to have plenty of these sea foods.
While we do our thing, a thought of how these shells could be judiciously used came to my mind, which is the sole reason for this post. Back in the days, we use things and dispose of them without even thinking of how to make good use of the wastes from these materials but today, almost nothing is a waste since wastes are being converted to usable materials. Things like human and animal dungs, kernel peals, snail shells and others.
In case you don’t know what periwinkles are, Periwinkles are the pebbles of the sea. You find them along the entire coast, on breakwaters, dikes, piers, etc. Periwinkle shells are obtained from periwinkle. Periwinkles are marine molluscs (gastropods) with thick spiral shells.
USES OF PERIWINKLE SHELL
1. Making of Vim scouring powder for dish washing and tooth pastes:
One of the very many uses of periwinkle shell is its great application in the making of Vim. Vim scouring powder is a range of household washing products and a very important tool in making toothpaste.
2. Used as conglomerate in concrete reinforcement
Periwinkle shell concrete is prepared almost the same way the gravel concrete is prepared with a difference of using periwinkle shells in place of river gravel, It has been shown that periwinkle shells can be used as a partial replacement for granite in normal construction works and that the strength development in periwinkle-granite concrete is similar to those of conventional granite concrete
A soak away is a hole or pit dug right in the ground which is filled with coarse stone, rubble and in some cases periwinkle shells that allows surface water to percolate back into the earth close to where it falls. Aside the coarse stones and rubble in some cases, periwinkle shells are found to be very useful in making of soak-away.
4. Concrete Slabs
A concrete slab is a common structural element of modern buildings, periwinkle shells are often used.
5. Periwinkle shells can equally used in Road Constructions.
